What is Flocking?
Flocking is a simple way to reduce the internal reflections in your Holga. Inside your Holga is incredibly shiny plastic. This shine increases the risk of light leaks and lowers your overall contrast. In order to rectify this, you need to spray the inside of your Holga with flat (or matt) black paint.
What do I need?
- Krylon Ultra Flat spray paint - (or any similar matt black model spray)
- Masking tape
- Old newspaper
- Well ventilated area, or spray booth
How do I do it?
Luckily, this is one of the easiest modifications you can do to your Holga.
- Take the back off and apply masking tape round the edges of your Holga
- Now tape over the square hole just behind the shutter, and over the red window on the back of the Holga
- Lay out some old newspaper and place your Holga on top
- Remove the foam in the film chambers
- Spray light coats of paint evenly over the Holga and back. It's better to do 2 or 3 light coats rather than 1 heavy coat. Let the paint dry for an hour or so between each coat
- Leave to dry, then inspect it to see if it needs another coat
- If finished, glue new foam in place using hot glue gun
If you use the 6x6 mask then this modification is even easier. All you need to do is tape up the edges of your mask and spray. You may also benefit from masking the camera as shown below and giving it a quick spray. If you unscrew the shutter mechanism, you can tape the outside of the square in the middle of the Holga. This means when you can get better paint coverage inside. Don't forget to spray the back panel of the Holga (tape that red window up first)!
